Safety Connection was appointed to Stage 4 and 5 of the project. The project, DCT Re-Engineering at Pier 2 in Durban Harbour, involved the demolition and rebuilding of the existing service buildings within the container terminal area to increase container handling and storage capacity of the terminal. Large areas of the site were declared an asbestos hazardous zone due to historic raw blue, white and brown asbestos embedded in the soil. Approximately 60 000 cubic meters of contaminated soil was removed as part of the rehabilitation before an asbestos clearance certificate could be issued to allow construction work to commence. The construction of new container storage and handling structures along with repairs to the wharf were part of the scope of works.
Our involvement in this project led to Transnet Capital Projects appointing Safety Connection to several other large projects within the Durban Port.
